Sidney F. Greenwald

Greenwald,Sidney F., a resident of Barrington, died on Tuesday, May 17 at Miriam Hospital.

Mr. Greenwald was the founder and former CEO of Hart Corporation of Providence, a holding company of several design, engineering and construction companies.

From 1979 to 1983, Mr. Greenwald served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Miriam Hospital. In 1982 he was awarded the Rhode Island Hospital Association’s Distinguished Service Award for his leadership in the development of an excellent cardiac surgery facility in Rhode Island. In 2010 he was awarded the Miriam Hospital’s Person of the Year Award.

Mr. Greenwald also served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) from 1985 to 1989, and again from 1992 through 1995. He was awarded the RISD President’s Medal for outstanding service in 1994 and the Distinguished Service Award of the alumni association in 1995. In June of 2000 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts Degree from RISD.

Mr. Greenwald’s other volunteer activities included serving as an honorary member of the Planned Parenthood Board of Trustees, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Brown University Haffenreffer Museum, and as President of the MIT Club of Rhode Island.

Mr. Greenwald was an enthusiastic sailor and was active in yachting on Narragansett Bay. As a member of the U.S. Power Squadron he taught celestial navigation and other piloting and seamanship courses for many years. He was a past Commodore of the Barrington Yacht Club and a past president of the Narragansett Bay Yachting Association.

Mr. Greenwald was born in Baltimore, Maryland. After graduation from MIT, he served in the United States Navy in World War II, where he was Officer-in-Charge of the Cavite Naval Base in Manila Bay, Philippines.

Mr. Greenwald was married for over 50 years to Barbara Arnstein Greenwald, who died in 1999. He is survived by a sister, Bette Fogel of Charleston SC, a son, Charles Greenwald of Indonesia and his fiancee, Ms.Kelly Tijoe, a daughter, Betsey Zimmering and her husband Paul of Cheshire CT, a son, Roy Greenwald and his wife Gail of Cambridge MA, four grandchildren, Katy Greenwald and her husband Brandon Groff and daughter Matilda Groff of Ypsilanti, MI, Josh Zimmering and his wife Catherine of Denver CO, Stephanie Schiff and her husband Steven of Hoboken NJ, and Diana Greenwald and her fiance David McWilliam of Ypsilanti MI.

A memorial service will take place on Tuesday May 24, 2016 at 1:00 PM in Smith-Mason Funeral Home, 398 Willett Avenue, Riverside, RI 02915. Burial will be private. Calling hours are 1 hour prior to the service from 12:00 PM to 1:00PM.
