Philip Wallis, of Barrington, RI, passed away on April 22, 2026, at the age of 78.
Philip was born on April 15, 1948 in Beeston, Nottinghamshire, England, to Arthur and Winifred Wallis. He attended the University of Bristol, where he earned a B.Sc. (Hon) and PhD in physical chemistry and met his wife, Christine. Early in his career, he worked for the Parker Pen Company on fountain pens, which led him to immigrate to the US in 1982. First living in Janesville, WI, he lived in multiple states over 15 years before settling in Rhode Island in 1997, where he resided until his death. He enjoyed a productive career as a research scientist and was an authority on subjects including pen and ink technology and carbon nanotubes. After retiring, he focused his 45 years of scientific inquiry into culinary pursuits and became an accomplished cook and bread maker. He took great pleasure in cooking elaborate meals for family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Christine (née Fildes); daughters Elizabeth (Charleston, SC) and Victoria (Brooklyn, NY); in England by his sisters-in-law Susan Kerr (Neal Kerr) and Wendy Langfield (Les Glass); nieces Katy Cooper, Jen Langfield, and Prue Langfield and nephew Oliver Cooper.
