Castelnovo, Mary Louise (Daniel), 93, of Portsmouth passed away peacefully on June 29th at the Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. She was the beloved wife of Frank P. Castelnovo. Born in Anderson, SC she was the daughter of the late James Robert Daniel and Mozelle (Camp) Daniel. She attended the University of Georgia and the prestigious High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Ga. During WWII she was employed at the Lockheed Aircraft factory as a quality control inspector. Thereafter, she was employed as an accountant for Ward Baking Co. in Atlanta. In 1953 she was accepted into the U.S. State Department’s Foreign Service and was assigned to the U.S. Consulate, Trieste, Italy as personnel officer. In 1956 she married her husband (U.S. I.N.S. Department of Justice) in Trieste subsequently living in Salzburg and Vienna, Austria and Rome, Italy. After being re-assigned stateside the family resided in Emerson, NJ moving to Barrington, RI in 1968. In 1986 she became a member of the Providence Art Club achieving prominence as an impressionist painter of New England landscapes where she was also an instructor and mentor to many fellow artists. She consistently exhibited her work, garnering many awards in regional exhibitions and at the Providence Art Club. Her paintings appeared in many magazine publications and were purchased by many major corporations. She would often donate her paintings to many public service and charitable organizations for their benefit. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Besides her husband she is survived by her daughter, Annie McMullen and her husband, William, of Bristol; a sister Margie Herring of Royston, GA and sister-in-law, Sandra Daniel of Dawsonville, GA in addition to many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her brothers Harold, Tony, Bobby, Eddie, Kenneth and Luther and sisters Lydia, LaRose and Joyce. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 8th from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Smith-Mason Funeral Home, 398 Willett Avenue, Riverside, RI. Burial will be private in Newton Cemetery, Newton, MA. A celebration of Mary’s life will be held later this summer at the Providence Art Club. Mary suffered from Fuch’s Dystrophy in her later years which threatened to rob her of sight. Her family is deeply indebted to Francis Price, MD (Cornea Research Foundation in Indianapolis) whose skilled expertise in performing corneal transplants in Fuch’s Dystrophy patients restored her sight in two successful surgeries, the second at the age of 90, thus allowing her to continue her passion for painting which brought her so much joy and enabled her, at the age of 91, to have a solo show of her work at the Providence Art Club. Memorial contributions in Mary’s memory to the Cornea Research Foundation, 9002 N.
