Martina G. Sullivan, 97, of Newport and Barrington, died peacefully on May 29, 2026 at the Hattie Ide Chaffee home in Riverside where she spent the last few years of her life.
Martina was born in Newport, RI to Aloysius and Martina (Christmas) Sullivan. She had one brother, Aloysius, Jr. who lived only a month before he passed. While still a young woman, Martina’s father had passed and her mother became incapacitated due to an illness, so she was looked after by a friend, Mrs. Margaret Porter.
After graduation from high school, Martina began working as a telephone operator for AT&T in Newport, RI for many years until the company moved to East Providence, RI and was bought out by Verizon. She finished her 40 year working career there and retired in 1987. She often spoke fondly of her many friends at the phone company. She enjoyed traveling, dining out and especially shopping during her lunch hour in the 1969 light yellow Camaro with her dear friend Lillian Horan.
While living in Newport, she attended St Joseph’s Catholic church. After moving to Barrington, where she spent 36 years at The Meadows apartments, she attended St. Brendan’s.
She leaves behind her dear lifelong friend Ellen Canning of San Diego, CA
At Martina’s request, there will not be any services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Hattie Ide Chaffee Employee Fund, 200 Wampanoag Trail, Riverside, RI 02915
