Louise Hawkins Obituary

Louise Hawkins passed on November 1st at the age of 89. She is survived by her son Chip and daughter-in-law Susan and grandchildren Sarah Hawkins and Alden Hawkins. Louise was pre-deceased by her loving husband Nelson Hawkins Sr. and her son John Hawkins.

Louise spent most of her life in Barrington. Her life revolved around family, boating and skiing. Most summers were spent cruising the waters of Narragansett Bay, Buzzards Bay, Vineyard Sound and Nantucket Sound.  Alongside Nelson, they sailed at every opportunity including trips in the Caribbean. Her offshore experience included a return trip from Bermuda following a Newport to Bermuda Race. Winter weekends were faithfully committed to skiing up at Waterville Valley, NH with family and friends.

The Barrington Yacht Club played a huge role in Louise's life and she was involved with several of the Club committees for many years. Nelson and Louise were Barrington Yacht Club Life Members. Louise was the first female at BYC to skipper a Sunfish in what was the Tired Father’s Series (now known as the Thursday evening Senior Championship). The Barrington Yacht Club cruises were family affairs for over 55 years aboard all their vessels each named "Foxy". During the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s they raced their boats all over Southern New England and spent countless voyages enjoying the water, family and companionship of other BYC members. Louise was an athlete at heart and beyond her love of sailing and skiing, she was a competitive tennis player and swam whenever possible.

Sadly, dementia claimed the past several years of her life, and we hope she now rests in peace. Funeral services will be private.
