James D. Janetakos 83, of Barrington, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2024. Born in Buffalo, NY to George Janetakos and Elsie O’Dell, Jim graduated from Defiance College and earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work Services from University of Chicago. He later went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Health Care Administration from Salve Regina University. Jim was proud of his days playing football and lacrosse at Defiance College. Jim was an imposing offensive and defensive lineman whose size and strength were instrumental in his team’s successes.
Jim dedicated many years to social work services and healthcare administration, where his leadership was marked by kindness and compassion, particularly in advocating for the elderly. He shared his knowledge whenever possible, publishing several papers as well as being a reliable mentor to many.
Jim was the cherished husband of the late Cynthia Kovolyan Janetakos. He is survived by his sisters Presbytera Stavroula Janetakos, and Angie Janetakos, stepsons JC Kovolyan (Terrie) his grandchildren Jack and Ava Kovolyan, Kurt Kovolyan (Heather) his grandchildren Trey and Genevieve Kovolyan, and Eric Kovolyan (Kerry Daigle). He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Elsie, his brother Thomas Janetakos, his sisters Eleanor Janetakos and Penny Janetakos.
Jim's grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he was a devoted and loving Papou who enthusiastically supported them in every endeavor capturing their achievements through his lens at every sporting event. Jim will be remembered for his friendly and kind demeanor, deep love for his family, and pride in his Greek heritage. Jim treasured engaging conversations, eagerly sharing his knowledge and experiences with others. His generosity, support, and encouragement touched countless lives, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
Visitation will be on Thursday August 1, 2024 from 10:00 AM-11:00 AM in the Smith-Mason Funeral Home 398 Willett Ave, Riverside, RI 02915. Burial will be private.
