Frederick MacDonald Obituary

Frederick H. MacDonald, age 86, of Riverside died peacefully at the Philip Hulitar Hope Hospice Center in Providence on December 25, 2020. He was the loving husband of Helen W. MacDonald for 61 years and the son of Robert G. MacDonald and Esther E. MacDonald. His sister Margaret A. MacDonald predeceased him.

Fred is survived by his four loving children, Katherine Lynn Melton of Chapel Hill, NC, Scott Robert MacDonald his wife Mary of San Diego, CA, John Frederick MacDonald and his wife Allison of North Attleboro, MA and Christine Ann Anderson of Manchester, NH.  Also surviving are seven grandchildren including Alex Melton, Tara Anderson, Jessica MacDonald, Isaac Anderson, Brandon MacDonald, Shaun MacDonald and Danielle MacDonald.

Fred was born in New Kensington, PA and graduated from Ridgeway High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Penn State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Cincinnati. Upon graduation, Fred joined General Electric in Cincinnati, OH. General Electric then transferred Fred to Pittsfield, MA to become Manager of Manufacturing where he was in charge of large transformers. He continued his professional career working for General Electric in both Hickory, NC and Norwalk, CT. After many years with General Electric, Fred joined ITT and then held several managerial positions at various wire and cable plants including Royal Electric.

In his nonprofessional life, Fred was a long-time member of Barrington Congregational Church where he sang in the choir and served on numerous committees including assistant treasurer, finance, personnel and membership. In addition, he was an active member of Lifelong Learning Collaborative. Fred was also an avid volunteer tutor for Literacy Volunteers of East Bay and most recently he tutored elementary students in the Providence School System.

Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, the funeral will be private. Fred’s final resting place will be at Swan Point Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Barrington Congregational Church at 461 County Road, Barrington, RI 02806 or the Philip Hulitar Hope Hospice Center at 1085 North Main Street, Providence RI 02904
