Fred Warrender Obituary

Frederick Paul Warrender, Jr., a cherished individual known for his kind, loving, caring, sharply intelligent, humorous personality, left us on Sunday, September 15, 2024.  Born on October 13, 1935 in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania, Fred lived a life filled with tremendous passions, as a well as a love for making money, which he would jokingly say was his best hobby.

Fred was an only child to Frederick Sr., and Nancy Warrender. He was their “Honey Junior.” He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sandra Shapiro Warrender. They met at Carnegie Mellon University (formerly Carnegie Tech) in Pittsburgh, PA on the second day of Sandy’s freshman experience. He was her “Knight in Shining Armor.”

Fred is survived by his two children, F. Paul Warrender and Hally Warrender Azevedo; Paul’s spouse, Robin, and Hally’s spouse, Joseph; as well as his grandchildren Ashleigh, Elise, Oliver, Alexandra, Kylie, and great grandchildren Parker and Antoinette; and beloved sister-in-law Carol Shapiro (AKA: BBB). The departure leaves an unfillable void in their lives, yet they find comfort in the memories and everlasting love that they shared.

Fred had many accomplishments as a mechanical engineer. His most commendable accomplishment was when he was a Chief Facilities Project Engineer through Boeing Company for the Saturn V Project. Fred was nominated to the NASA Apollo/Saturn V Roll of Honor. His name is recorded in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., for his distinguished participation in the First United States Manned Lunar Landing.

Fred loved power boating and fishing, where he spent much of his free time. He and Sandy especially enjoyed many summers docked at the Coastwise Wharf on Martha’s Vineyard, with the company of lifelong friends. Later, Fred and Sandy also docked their power boat, The Overdraft, in Newport, RI.

In addition to boating, Fred and Sandy were avid travelers. In fact, they visited all 50 states; traveling to many in their Airstream trailer.

Fred was a member of the Free Masons organization. He attended many meetings and volunteered at events.

Fred loved his dogs, to name a few: Boots, Baron, Becky, Liddy, Bella, and his one surviving rescue dog, Chloe.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date. As Fred prioritized finding joy in life and sharing it with others, the family asks that you do the same - go out and do something that brings you real joy and share it with those around you. If you feel so moved, reach out and tell us about it - or of a joyful time shared with Fred.

Fun fact about Fred: he memorized hundreds, possibly thousands of limericks. He would entertain all by reciting them at parties. Here is one that his daughter has written about Fred:
There once was a man named Fred
Now our loving Fred is dead
This is hard for us
He wouldn’t like us to fuss
Goodbye to our dearly departed Fred
