Elizabeth (Bette) Hunter Ward of Barrington, RI, passed away at 101 years old in the loving arms of her family on February 3, 2026.
She was the beloved daughter of William Hunter and Anne Levis Powell Hunter. Elizabeth was the dear sister of William Hunter and Douglas Powell Hunter. She was a cherished sister-in-law to Margaret Hunter, Lois Hunter, and Randalyn Hunter.
Bette was the widow of Robert S. Adams and LeRoy S. Ward. She is survived by her son, Peter R. Adams and his wife Barbara, and her daughters, Susan E. Mazur with her late husband Steven, and Meridith W. Orazi and her husband Kenneth. She was a proud grandmother to Patience Venditelli and her husband Anthony, Robert Adams and his wife Shea, Andrew Mazur, and Nicholas Orazi and his wife Amanda. She was also blessed with 3 great-grandchildren.
A lifelong Rhode Islander, Bette was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island. Since 1961, she was a resident of Barrington, Rhode Island, and held the town close to her heart.
Bette graduated from Hope High School in 1942 and later from Katharine Gibbs School. She spent her professional life as an administrative assistant and secretary. She later devoted 15 years to working in the business office at Moses Brown School, before retiring in 1989.
In retirement, Bette especially enjoyed volunteering at Blithewold Mansion, where she worked in the gift shop and served as a docent. During her time there, she was formally recognized for her accomplishments and generosity. She also cherished traveling with family and friends over the years.
Bette found her greatest joy in family and friends. She loved painting, sunsets, and the ocean, and was deeply devoted to her faith. A loyal member of Community Church of Providence for more than 50 years, she served as a deacon, teller, and as President and Treasurer of the Woman’s Society.
Calling hours will be held on February 20th from 4:00-6:00pm at Smith-Mason Funeral Home (398 Willett Ave., Riverside, Rhode Island, 02915)
Her funeral will be held at Community Church of Providence (372 Wayland Ave, Providence, RI, 02906) on February 21st at 10am.
Bette will be remembered for her quiet strength, devotion to others, and the deep love she had for her family. She was a steady presence, a gentle listener, and a loving heart to all who called her Mom, Grandma, sister, aunt, or friend. She will be forever loved and never forgotten.
