Robert Edwin Kjellman, 89, of North Dighton, MA, died peacefully at Hope Hospice and Palliative
Care in Providence, RI on June 8, 2019. He was born in Providence, RI, August 9, 1929, to the late
Harold R. and Ellen F. Kjellman. He grew up in East Providence, RI and graduated from East
Providence High School in 1946 and the University of Rhode Island in 1952.
After graduating from high school in 1946, Robert enlisted in the United States Army and served in
Japan. Upon his return, he met his future wife, Joan M. Sorterup. They were married in June, 1952
shortly after his graduation from URI, where he earned a degree in Engineering. Robert worked a
number of years for BIF – A Unit of General Signal, and for Blount Seafood, retiring in 1996.
Robert was predeceased by his loving wife Joan, married for 47 years, in January, 2000. He is survived
by his four sons, Paul R. Kjellman and his wife Nancy of Jacksonville, FL, Carl H. Kjellman and his
wife Donna of North Dighton, MA, Mark E. Kjellman and his wife Priscilla of Phippsburg, ME, David
A. Kjellman and his wife Jeanne of Lakeville, MA.; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He faithfully attended Barrington Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher and singing in
the choir for many years. Early in his retirement, Robert volunteered his time assisting in the grounds
maintenance for the church and Barrington Christian Academy.
Calling hours will be held Friday June 14, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 PM in Smith-Mason Funeral Home, 398 Willett Avenue, Riverside, RI 02915. A Funeral service will be held on Saturday June 15, 2019 at 11:00 AM in Barrington Baptist Church, 25 Old County Road, Barrington, RI 02806. A collation will be held in the church hall immediately following the funeral service. Burial will follow the collation in Rehoboth Village Cemetery, Rehoboth, MA.
