Virginia McClelland

McClelland, Virginia (Roberson), age 86 of Tall Pines Drive, Barrington died Friday Feb 22
under hospice care after hospitalization for a stroke in early Feb. She was the wife of the late James E. McClelland Jr. Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1921 daughter of the late Frank and Mildred Roberson. Virginia was a graduate of Wellesley College in Boston, class of 1943,
where she met James (Jim) who was attending MIT.

Her husband's career moves resulted in residences in Kansas, Ohio, Oklahoma,
Texas, and a former residence in Barrington from 1956 to 1966, when her husband was director of research, Fram Corp in Pawtucket. During that time, Virginia was a member of the Barrington Yacht Club, served on the vestry of St John's Episcopal Church, sang in the choir at St John's, and was past president of the ECW. She played the cello in the Barrington Symphony and was a member of the DAR.

Before moving back to Barrington in 1998, Virginia and Jim lived in Ft Worth, Texas for 20 years, where Jim retired as Vice President of Ken Davis Industries. They enjoyed sailboat racing and race committee work at the Ft Worth Boat Club, where they were involved in the Skipperettes program, and many other club activities. Virginia was a docent at the Kimbell Art Museum. She was a lover of music, an accomplished pianist, and, with her husband, enjoyed Ft Worth Symphony concerts, opera, and the Van Cliburn competition performances. She traveled the world and enjoyed island sailboat charters with her family.

Virginia leaves a son, James E McClelland III of Barrington, a daughter, Marjorie Jane McClelland of Kansas City and Barrington, a brother John P Roberson, of Atlanta, Georgia, a sister Marjorie Crittenden of Winter Haven Florida, a grandson, James Edward (Ted) McClelland of Pensacola Florida, a granddaughter Amanda Elizabeth Pitcavage and a great-granddaughter, Anna Catherine Pitcavage both of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

A private funeral service will be held in St. John’s Episcopal Church Barrington. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 5 to 8 PM in the Smith-Mason Funeral Home 398 Willett Avenue Riverside. Burial will be at a later date in Independence, Kansas. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church in memory of Virginia McClelland 191 County Road Barrington, RI 02806.
